First radish of the season
This evening, about three weeks after the seeds were planted, I harvested the first French breakfast radish from our newly-dug vegetable patch. After taking this photo, I ate it the only way you can eat the first radish of the season: sliced in half, with a sprinkle of salt. It was delicious!
But there are still lots more in the garden, so I’d love to hear some ideas for using them. What’s your favourite way to serve radishes?

Sorry buddy, I got nuthin. I didn’t even know to put salt on them. Radishes barely register as food to me. Yet /every/ time I ask N* to pick up “justsomevegetables” from the grocery store, he comes home with radishes. Every. Time.
I do not know where he gets this from. I keep explaining that radishes belong firmly in the “vegetables-> garnish-> garnishes-do-not-a-veggie-tray-make” category. I will watch your entry to see if you can save me from my radish lovin’ husband.
I’m pretty sure my husband feels the same way, Catherine. I’ve barely managed to convince him, by occasionally serving sautéed radishes, that they actually qualify as a food. He still prefers to avoid them.
Of course, when I was growing up, the only thing we ever ate them in was green salad…
My guy is a radish hound as well, and although I’m much more sensitive to the “heat” than he is, I’m happy to eat them when he brings home a bunch from the market. Dipping them into a small pile of salt on the plate as an appetizer is our most common way of eating them as well, and also added to green salads, with a good strong red-wine vinegar/mustard vinaigrette. I honestly can’t think of anything else that we do with them, so I’ll be following this thread too!
